Why every workday at AMOTEK kicks off with a daily scrum:

It’s 8 AM. Some of us are still waking up with a coffee in hand, while others have already been awake for some time (yes, we have morning people on the team). But no matter how awake (or half-asleep) we are, we all start the day the same way: with a Daily Scrum.

Whether you're in the office, working from home, or checking in from a café with questionable WiFi, you must join. No excuses. The Daily Scrum is short and to the point. Most importantly, it keeps us all on track. But why do we insist on it? Simple: those 15 minutes bring focus, clarity, and connection. Three things every start-up or scale-up needs.

Why do we stick to it?

We love a bit of structure, but not the kind that buries you in endless meetings and reports. We believe in just enough routine to keep things running efficiently without slowing anyone down. That’s why we follow a simple rhythm: a quick Daily Scrum to align and remove any blockers.

That’s it. No unnecessary reports. No endless email chains. Just a clear, streamlined way to keep everyone on the same page.

But let’s be honest, not everyone was convinced at first. “Do we really need a meeting every morning?” “Can’t we just message each other?” “What if I’m still in my pyjamas?” (Fair question.) But once we gave it a go, we quickly realised that this tiny daily habit had a massive impact on the way we work.

The impact of a Daily Scrum

You might be thinking, "Okay, but does a short daily meeting really change anything?" The answer: absolutely. Here’s how it transforms our workflow and boosts productivity.

1. Smoother communication (less back and forth)

Ever joined a meeting only to realise it could have been an email? Or spent hours stuck on something, waiting for input that could have been addressed in minutes? That’s exactly what we avoid with our Daily Scrum.

Every morning, we check in on what’s been done, what’s next and most importantly: what’s standing in the way. Blockers get flagged early, so instead of scheduling yet another meeting, we tackle issues immediately or involve the right people straight away. This simple habit saves us hours of unnecessary back-and-forth.

2. Instant clarity on priorities

We’ve all had days where we open our laptop and think, Okay… where do I even start? The Daily Scrum throws away that uncertainty. By the time we’re done, we all know exactly what needs to be done first. No second-guessing, no getting lost in low-priority tasks, just straight to what matters most.

3. Faster Problem-Solving

Let’s say you hit a roadblock. Do you:
A) Struggle in silence for hours?
B) Spam your teammates with messages until someone replies?
C) Bring it up in the Daily Scrum and get instant help?

(If you picked C, you get extra AMOTEK points.)

One of the biggest perks of this daily check-in is that we can immediately spot obstacles and solve them together. Instead of wasting time trying to figure things out alone, we get quick input and keep the momentum going.

4. Higher engagement and team spirit

At AMOTEK, we believe work should be productive, but also fun. That’s why we start each Daily Scrum with a quick team exercise. Something light to wake up our brains and we wrap it up with a short knowledge-sharing moment. And yes, we end with (virtual) high-fives, because why not?

In some companies, people can go days without actually talking to each other. Not here. Whether we’re in the office or working remotely, the Daily Scrum keeps us connected. When you check in with your team every morning, you feel more involved, more in sync and more invested in the work you’re doing. Everyone gets a voice and that sense of ownership makes all the difference.

A small habit that creates big wins

For us, the Daily Scrum is more than just a check-in. It’s how we stay aligned, how we work smarter and how we keep things moving without unnecessary delays. And honestly? It’s a great way to start the day. Sure, some mornings we’re half-asleep and sometimes someone’s cat makes an unexpected appearance (we love it). But by 8:15 AM, we’re all on the same page and ready to go.

Curious if a Daily Scrum could work for your team? Try it out for a week and see how it changes the way you work. Worst case? You spent 15 minutes a day testing something new. Best case? You’ll wonder how you ever worked without it.
